Lemon Allspice Cookies

lemon allspice crisps

These gorgeous little cookies are crisp and fresh, with a delicate amount of spice balanced wonderfully by the tart lemon. I’ve been making them since I was a wee teen, and I actually remember the day I clipped the recipe out of what was likely a Canadian Living magazine, and taped it to the inside of the cabin cookbook—the family cookbook which I now call my own. And since then, I’ve messed them up a few times, too—forgetting the egg, the baking powder, or both! And surprisingly, they’ve still worked out wonderfully. So perhaps I should call these “fool-proof” cookies!

These lemon allspice cookies can be made fresh, or the dough can be rolled and kept in your freezer as icebox cookies for when you need them. Enjoy!

Spiced Aztec Cookies

These are not chocolate chip cookies! Cinnamon, chocolate, and a bit of cayenne pepper make these unique cookies exotic and delicious. They’re minimal effort, and as the dough needs to be refrigerated, you can keep it on hand for when you need a quick batch. My mum would make these cookies around Christmas, for dinner parties or for hampers for family.

I made these for our recent Christmas in July dinner party, and they were devoured! So as requested, here’s the recipe. More Christmas-themed food is on the way too, never fear!

Ginger Snap Cookies

Ahh… here in “sunny” Australia, things aren’t as balmy as they usually are. Winter is upon us, and while the days are starting to get longer, it’s still pretty chilly. Since Christmas falls during the middle of summer in Australia, I had basically no motivation to want to cook the rich, delicious foods associated with the holidays. Now that it’s cooled off, though, I’m craving hot tea and cookies and pie and a good roast turkey. The solution? Christmas in July! Not only are we having a dinner party this weekend to celebrate, but I’ve noticed a small uprising of fellow Christmas in July supporters… ‘Winterland’ markets and ice skating at our local venue (guess what I’m doing on the weekend too!), and festively decorated store windows. It’s subtle, but it’s there, and it feels surprisingly awesome to get into the Christmas spirit in July.

These ginger snap gems are a family recipe in the way that my mum’s been making them since I was a kid. So simple and sweet! There’ll be a few different Christmas-themed recipes up over the next few days, but why not start with these cookies to bring a little bit of holiday cheer to your tummy.
